The Flood

This morning when I woke to get Robby ready for school I got a call from Mary on her way home from work. She was stuck in traffic on Varnum Avenue. The rain that had been coming down for days had caused the Merrimack to start flooding over its banks. I don't often put pictures on my site that I didn't take myself, but these pictures of Lowell and the Flood of 2006 are just something that has to be seen and remembered. The mills in Lowell. I believe these ones were converted into apartments. I used to drive past these houses on Old Ferry Road each day on my way to work. JJ Boomers parking lot. Brunswick bowling lanes. A picture looking South from the Rourke bridge. It turns out Mary was one of the last people to make it over the Rourke bridge before it closed this morning. Another picture taken from the Rourke Bridge of the boathouse. Taken from the middle of Pawtucket Boulevard, you can't tell where the road starts and the river ends. Mary was stuck in a line of traffic at this set of lights earlier this morning. She was lucky that she got out of work at 7am instead of a couple hours later. What a difference a year makes.
