Library Books

I can't remember going to the library much when I was a kid. I think it is the best deal in town. I mean free books and movies? Throw in some free food and I think that makes paradise. I am real glad Mary takes the kids to the library often when I go to work. It is so nice to come home and see the kids enthralled in a good book. When I was little I did not like to read. I remember in highschool I would do everything possible not to have to read. Good old Cliff Notes. Looking back I am really not sure why I did not want to read. I mean I am not sure if I was lazy, or if it was just habit. Everything changed that day in Mr. Donovan's 10th grade English class. Every time Mr. Donovan would call on me with a question regarding our reading assignment, I would tell him that I did not do the reading. I remember when he used to look around the room for someone to ask, I would slouch down in my chair hiding behind the girl that sat in front of me. I would pray that he did not call on me. Well, this one day, I swear he had it in for me. I think we were reading Silas Marner, and there I was slouching down in my chair, when he asked me a question regarding our reading assignment. Of course, I said I did not know. So, he got someone else to answer. Then he asked me another question, "Sorry, I don't know." And another, until he said, "Brian please see me after class." For the rest of that class, I was petrified. Horrified. I had never been asked by a teacher to stay after class. Well, the class ended and everyone left. Everyone except me. Mr. Donovan told me that this had to stop. He assigned reading each day, and he expected me to have the reading completed. He was stern and I was quiet as a mouse. Afterwards, he asked me if we have an understanding and I agreed. When I left the class room I walked out the back door of the school, into the woods a little ways, and balled. I cried and cried for like 10 minutes. I am not sure if I read all of Silas Marner. However, I read the next book we were assigned The Scarlet Letter from cover to cover. To this day it is still one of my favorites. I have loved books ever since. Thank you Mr. Donovan for being the best teacher I ever had.
