Close Call
It is crazy how a fraction of an instant can change your whole life. Today, was nearly one of those days.
This morning we drove into Boston with Tim and his kids. We brought the kids bikes with us and planned to ride bikes along the river. It was a beautiful day, and we had a lot of fun. Until something happened on our way back to our car.
We were waiting at a traffic light in front of the Sonesta hotel in Cambridge. Tim's kids were tired and did not feel like riding there bikes anymore. So, Mary and I turned towards Tim to help carry his kids bikes. Then the traffic light turned red and the walk light turned on. As soon as Robby saw the walk light, he started walking. Unfortunately, there was a taxi that decided to run the red light. Tim screamed and I turned to see what looked like a taxi car actually speeding up as it headed towards Robby. Robby turned his head back at Tim when he screamed and never even saw the taxi. I think it came within inches of hitting and killing Robby.
I couldn't imagine life without him.
I remember several years ago I witnessed a car accident. There was a woman and a man walking on the side of the rode (Rt3a near Vinal Square in Chelmsford) pushing a stroller with a baby in it, in the middle of a snowstorm. Don't ask me why they are doing this in a snow storm. Anyhow, I was driving and a car passed me. As it passed me, he swerved back in front of me and that is when he lost control. I saw him trying to gain control back, and as I saw that happening, that is when I saw the couple pushing the baby stroller. Well, the car lost control and went off the road and actually hit the woman who was pushing the stroller. It only barely nudged her (maybe at like 1 or 2 mph.) Anyway, she did fall over, but she was okay. The man that was with the woman, then proceeded to go over to the drivers side of the car. The person in the car rolled down his wndow to apologize, but the man just reached into the car, grabbed the driver and started punching him, over and over in the face. I just kept on driving. I have thought about that day many times. I remember many times thinking how scary that is, that someone could have that amount of rage in them to just go and beat someone up like that.
Well, if that taxi driver hit Robby.
I would have killed him.
I think Robby was a little shook up about the whole thing. Even though he did not see the taxi, and did not really do anything wrong, I think we all freaked him out. It doesn't seem like Ben was too affected.
It is crazy how your life can change in an instant.
I don't think we will be riding bikes in Boston again anytime soon.
