Key West - Stupid Accident

After spending a fraction of a day in Naples to visit my grandparents, we left early this morning on the ferry from Marco Island to Key West. We should have pre-arranged our transportation before we got to Key West, because when we arrived there, we spent way too much time trying to figure out how we were going to get around the island. We ended up taking a taxi from the pier to our hotel (on the other side of the island.) By the time we got there, we were all pretty hungry so we walked over to Denny's which was a few blocks from our hotel. We spent several hours debating whether to rent bikes, or an electric car (which are soooo expensive) or just a regular car. In the end the decision was made for us, because of the accident. It was really stupid. We were coming back from dinner that night when I got a phone call. It was from a company I do sidework for. They were having server issues and needed my help. So, after dinner we went back to our hotel and I logged in to their server from my notebook. I was sitting on the bed with my leg curled up under me, when I had the urge to go to the bathroom. Without thinking, I got out of the bed and started walking towards the bathroom when I heard the crack, crack, crack. My foot had fallen asleep and when the rest of my body started toward the bathroom, my foot did not. I rolled my ankle very badly. The pain and throbbing came quick. I knew right away I had done something very bad. It was late, and I was instantly useless because of my ankle. Mary got the kids in bed, while I pined over my situation. Mary (thank goodness she is always so level-headed) quickly analyzed the sitation and gave me her diagnosis as a nurse. She said I should go to the hospital. Of course, I had no way to get there, so I called a taxi to take me to Lower Key West Hospital. The doctor took x-rays and told me his assessment of the x-rays: 1 - Either I have a small fracture of my fibia bone, in which case it will take 4 to 6 weeks to heal. 2 - Or, I chipped a small piece off the tip of my fibia, in which case it will take 4 to 6 weeks to heal. 3 - Or, that is just the way MY fibia looks, and it is a bad sprain, which would take a couple weeks to heal. He gave me a big brace/cast to wear on my foot/ankle. And he gave me crutches. I sort of felt like his diagnosis was useless, although I felt mildly better that I at least got the opinion of an "expert." I did feel really good about getting the care advice (he wrote up a 3 page document on how to care for a sprain/fractured ankle) and the brace and crutches. He even gave me a subscription for pain medication with one sample valium - wooweee! I remember a long time ago reading that the number one cause of rolling your ankle is your foot falling asleep. I wish in that one instant of time, I had just paid more attention to what I was doing. It would have saved a lot of pain and aggravation. I guess the one good thing that came out of this was that it made our decision on whether to rent bikes, an electric car or just a regular car a lot easier. Bikes were out of the question. And because I just spent $150 to go to the emergency room, an overpriced electric car was out of the question too.
