Afterglow
1997

Film.com: Set in Montreal, the film (which was also written by Rudolph) concerns two married couples in different seasons of life. Nick Nolte plays Lucky Mann, a general repairman and small-jobs contractor who openly and routinely cheats on his wife, Phyllis (Julie Christie), a sexually withdrawn, former B-movie actress who spends a lot of time watching her old films. Across town, Jeffrey Byron (Jonny Lee Miller), a twentysomething corporate climber and all-around prick, toys with the Oedipal vibe between himself and his older secretary while providing no comfort at home for his miserable wife, Marianne (Lara Flynn Boyle). The latter wants a child but Jeffrey doesn't. Meanwhile, the root of all problems between Lucky and Phyllis is in their own history as failed parents who inadvertently drove away their beloved daughter years before.
A karmic stew starts simmering when Lucky begins an affair with Marianne, while Phyllis lets Jeffrey woo her to the point where she spends a weekend with him on a business trip. Neither illicit couple knows about the other, but destiny is bound to force these people to deal with their own problems eventually. Review written by: Tom Keogh
